This weekly column has not been the first or only to observe private enterprise’s responsible leadership throughout the seemingly endless COVID-19 nightmare. The National Basketball Association was the first to shut down, and most recently, Wal-Mart stepped up, making facial masks mandatory. However wise and courageous these necessary actions have been, the record shows individual acts from even the most powerful private organizations is not enough.
Every elementary school child learns the United States is, uniquely, the world’s melting pot. Continued social strife may give us reason to question this, but one stroll through even the smallest town America proves how real the melting pot is. No matter where we are, we will find Chinese, Mexican, Thai, Italian, French, and every other nationality’s restaurant within walking distance from one another and a good old steak and brew sports bar. These independently owned restaurants best represent America, Ronald Reagan’s shining city on the hill, where distinct cultures blend to create our unique culture.
Today, these very restaurants providing essential heat for this melting pot is at grave risk. Instead of one organization and company at a time doing something to defend our way of life, this week’s column is all about every organization and company joining together and helping restaurants survive, rebuild, and thrive.
