Lake Mead posting its lowest water levels since it was created some 90 years ago has profound implications cutting across all quality of life issues.  Unprecedented, out of control flooding continues to decimate significant portions of Europe while wildfires rage in Siberia sending smoke across The Bering Strait to Alaska. The Pacific Northwest’s horrific Bootleg fire not only burns previously lush geographies, it creates historic weather patterns all its own felt as far away as the eastern US. No less an authority than AIG General Insurance’s CEO-North America Michael Price offers sage advice on how to best prepare for anticipated heavy hurricane season, quite possible to exceed 2020’s record of 30 designated major storms that caused nearly $50 billion in damage.

Evidence in front of our faces every day, peer reviewed scientific research dictates serious climate change should not be debased as a partisan political matter. In this respect, John Kerry speaks with authority of an informed expert urging the world’s governments to take more urgent action to reverse obvious climate crisis conditions.  Last week’s Total Food Service column offered advice for everyday things every foodservice manager can do to whip inflation now, where the collective industry force can have significantly positive impact reversing troubling economic trends. Today, for even higher stakes requiring nothing less than the same collective effort for now and the planet’s very future, a call to even more meaningful hospitality industry sustainability action.

Scheduled for early fall 2021, the Day & Nite family of companies is sponsoring and hosting a foodservice sustainability summit.  As one of the nation’s largest commercial HVAC – Refrigeration – Cooking – Plumbing equipment installation, maintenance and repair companies Day & Nite/All Service/Popular Plumbing/Performance Air Mechanical is well positioned to work throughout hospitality’s ecosystem to reduce everything from food waste to carbon footprint to proper disposal of commodities like refrigerant to packing materials used for shipping equipment and parts, to eliminating several steps in the prevailing industry supply chain all with stated goals of institutionalizing implementable practices and policies.  To be most comprehensive and produce tangible results, I encourage all segments of the hospitality industry to not only register but to submit ideas and topics for inclusion at this inaugural sustainability summit.

Nothing short of involved industry leadership will suffice.  Operational and environmental resiliency implications and consequences could not be more pressing.  To get on board for the vital hospitality industry sustainability summit email jbf@wearetheone.com
