Legendary law enforcement officer William Bratton often says ‘we’re communicating’ is the biggest lie in law enforcement.  While Commissioner Bratton and other experts will be sought after to comment on the US Senate January 6th Capitol Hill riot hearings, his observations about law enforcement communication are not limited to that field.

Despite more sources of available information, sophisticated technologies and analytics, too many businesses are often caught flat-footed and by surprise, taking on too much unnecessary risk most often due to a lack of coordinated communication.  Even if we didn’t have these tools and technologies, we all know it costs more to fill up our cars with gas than only a few short months ago.  Although Texas and other states should have better planned for protecting its infrastructure against extreme winter weather, with over a third of the nation’s oil production severely compromised as a result what direction do we suppose energy costs will head?

In our highly connected world, nothing is ever purely localized so the increased costs Texans will burden will surely be felt nationwide, even globally. In just a few sentences in a single paragraph, enough intelligence from reliable sources is presented where we can all reasonably project steep cost of doing business increases. But having the intelligence is rather meaningless; acting on it matters most.

Regardless of establishment size or type, direct and indirect energy expenses always rank in the top 3 of  foodservice operations costs. After all, there is only one thing guaranteed to work every minute of every day—refrigerators-freezers (at least they better be!).  Even with limited indoor seating capacity, HVAC—the single largest energy grid drain—is required for maintaining guest comfort and workplace safety. Indirectly, any day now expect transportation providers to (re)impose fuel surcharges for carrying everything from your perishables to equipment parts from distribution centers to your place of business.

All of these obvious forces conspiring against hospitality at the exact time the eternal hope coming with every spring coupled with Covid-19 vaccines will really propel our industry back to at least normal, preferably better. Not falling victim to Commissioner Bratton’s biggest lie requires greater, real-time and coordinated communication with key suppliers—especially those with considerable intelligence mining operations.
